Sustainability at Port Canaveral

Sustainability awareness and actions are ever-increasing, and Port Canaveral is taking the lead. Strategy and concepts develop into real-world action and results here at the Port.

“Ahoy!” Sustainability at the Port

Green Marine Certified

Green Marine promotes voluntary protection measures to continuously improve environmental performance. Certification is a rigorous process with the development of guiding principles beyond regulatory compliance in key areas.  Port Canaveral is one of only three Florida ports to earn this certification and has achieved annual certification status since 2016. Details on Green Marine’s certification policy and process can be found here: https://green-marine.org/certification/

Electrification at Port Canaveral

Port Canaveral has partnered with Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) on projects, including the following:

  • FPL SolarTogether® – a collaborative approach to have Port energy usage offset by solar.
  • FPL Solar Now™ – solar trees are located at the Exploration Tower and Jetty Park. These trees provide electricity to the local grid, are equipped with plugs to charge personal devices, and offer shade.
  • Electric Vehicle (EV) charging:  Two Level 2 chargers (each capable of charging two vehicles simultaneously) are available to Port employees, and (Coming Soon) Six FPL EVolution® Level 3 fast charging stations available to the Public.

Community Partners and Engagement

At Port Canaveral, community engagement is at the heart of our operations thus reflecting our commitment to being a responsible and supportive neighbor.  We actively collaborate with local organizations to foster positive relationships and contribute to regional development.  At Port Canaveral, we believe that strong community ties are essential to our success and the well-being of our local area.  Some of our community partners include the following: Keep Brevard Beautiful (KBB), Sea Turtle Preservation Society (STPS), Wild Florida Rescue, Florida Wildlife Hospital, Marine Resources Council, and many more!

Please take a look below to find out more information on our initiatives, and ways that the Community can get involved.
What is Smart Pond Technology at the Port?
The Canaveral Port Authority worked with National Stormwater Trust (NST) to install smart pond technology that implemented continuous monitoring and adaptive control of our largest regional stormwater treatment system. This provides real-time data and resiliency measures for the Port.
Does the Port use Reclaimed Water?
The Port utilizes Reclaimed Water for most of its irrigation needs. The City of Cape Canaveral provides this utility service to the Port.
How is Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) utilized at the Port?
Port Canaveral is currently home to three homeported cruise ships that are powered by LNG, and that number is scheduled to grow in the near future. Marine engines powered by LNG minimize particulate matter, virtually eliminate harmful air emissions of sulfur oxides (SOx), and reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) up to 85%.
